George A. Birkam Jr. of East Tawas, beloved husband, father and grandfather and "gentle giant," passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at his home, age 92 years.
The son of the late George A. Birkam Sr. and the late Mary (Cassidy) Birkam, George was born October 23, 1920 in Detroit. He married Mary Donnelly, his loving wife of 61 years, on April 28, 1951. She survives him.
George earned his master's degree in education from Wayne State University and was member of Beta Sigma Phi. He began his career in education at Horace Mann School in Detroit continuing at Clara Barton and George Carver schools, St. Gemma Elementary School in Redford and was completed at St. Joseph School in East Tawas. His distinguished career included teacher, principal and administrator.
He was actively involved in theatre and was a member of the Shoreline, Tawas Bay and St. Bede Players. George was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed theatre, reading to children and elders and the Detroit Tigers.
Surviving besides his wife, Mary, are two sons and two daughters, George A. Birkam III and his wife Dianne of Monroe, Anne Birkam of Saginaw, Fritz Birkam of Clinton Township and Monica Birkam of Auburn Hills; a granddaughter, Erin Birkam and her husband Bryan Davis of Monroe; a cousin, Sister Patricia Cassidy, I.H.M. of Monroe; and several nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Frederick Birkam.
Honoring Mr. Birkam's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. David Parsch will officiate. Friends may call at Holy Spirit Catholic Church where the family will be present on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the East Tawas Public Library or Holy Cross Children's Services.
