Margaret A. Derthick, age 70, of Oscoda died on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013 at Rolling Acres Assisted Living in East Tawas with her loving husband at her side.
She was born in Flint on July 3, 1943 to the late Harold and Annetta Brand (nee Palmer). Margaret earned her master's degree from Central Michigan University and later pursued her career in education at Oscoda Area Schools. She taught for several years and later served as the Junior High principal before retiring in 1993 after 25 years.
Margaret enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, creative art projects, playing games with her grandchildren, watching Michigan State football and basketball games and walking in the woods. She was an active member of Tawas Area Presbyterian Church and was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother in addition to being an outstanding teacher.
Margaret was voted educator of the year for Oscoda Area Schools. She had a special interest in promoting vacation bible schools and taking mission trips to Costa Rica representing her church to teach the poor elementary age children.
Margaret is survived by her husband William G. Derthick, whom she married on Aug. 3, 1974 in Flint; her 3 sons, Dr. Douglas (Marie) Gould of Rochester, William B. (Eileen) Derthick of Boulder, Colo. and Scott L. Derthick of East Lansing; and grandchildren, Maggie and Lulu Gould and Shannon and Spencer Derthick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her special aunt, Meg Brand.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at Tawas Area Presbyterian Church in East Tawas. Rev. John Barkett and Rev. Jan Chambers will officiate and interment will be in the church memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Margaret A.
