Harry G. Wellna of Tawas City passed away March 7, 2014 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti at 85 years of age.
He is survived by his daughters, Becky (Steve Svoboda) Wellna and Dawn (Karl) Cross; grandchildren, Dustin R. (Melissa) Cross and Tyler J. (Wendy) Cross; and great grandchildren, Gunnar R. Cross and Mason J. Cross. He is also survived by one sister, Susan J. Buck; and a brother-in-law, Russell R. Potts; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; parents, Jack and Ida Wellna; and siblings, Edward and Shirley; along with his dog and faithful companion, Willie.
Mr. Wellna was an Army veteran who drove tanks during the Korean War where he was stationed both in Hawaii and Japan. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the VFW Post 5678 in Tawas City, the Knights of Columbus and the American Red Cross. He lived part time in the Fowlerville area where he attended St. Agnes Catholic Church. In his younger days he played softball on a league and bowled for several years.
Mr. Wellna retired from the Alabaster U.S. Gypsum Company. After retirement he drove cars for Dean Arbour and enjoyed cutting wood. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and both he and his daughter, Becky, enjoyed hunting together every year.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 403 Wilkinson St. in East Tawas. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tawas Chapel of the Buresh Funeral home, 416 Whittemore St. in Tawas City and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Fr. Lawrence Boks will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Veterans of Foreign War.
