Following a lengthy and very complicated illness, Donald L. Makarski of East Tawas, formerly of Oscoda, died Easter Sunday afternoon with his wife, Darlene Makarski, at his side.
Born March 23, 1937, Don retired in 1992 from Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, where he had been a product design engineer. His proudest memory there was his leadership in the creation of the Ford Escort. As a young man, Don joined the United States Air Force, where he had hoped to be a pilot. The military, however, had other ideas and Don spent his four-year term as a member of the Military Police.
A devout Catholic, Don was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hamtramck for many years. He was also a lifetime Mason. Although a very learned man, able to speak a little of several languages, Don was most definitely quite modest. Those who knew him well will remember mostly how extraordinarily kind and gentle he was, and what a great sense of humor he possessed.
Proceeding him in death were Don's mother and father, Veronica (Wisniewski) and Nicholas Makarski; his adoptive aunt and uncle, Anne and Hollie Mooney; and his brother, Richard Makarski. Don leaves behind his beloved wife, Darlene Makarski of East Tawas; his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Carey Makarski of Madison Heights; and his devoted Shih-Tzu dog, Meesha.
A Celebration of Life will take place by invitation soon at Don's and Darlene's East Tawas home. Cremation arrangements are by Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City. An on-line guest registry is available at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.
