Donald Walter Deering, age 85, of Tawas City passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born the son of Walter and Hazel (Goodman) Deering on Aug. 23, 1927 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Don was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during World War II in Guam and the Philippines. He was a current member of American Legion in East Tawas, Shorthorn Hunting Club, Tawas United Methodist Church and the Masonic Temple in Tawas City.
Don married the love of his life Leona (Hatcher) on Dec. 6, 1947 at AuGres Methodist Church. Don retired from U.S. Gypsum in Alabaster after 37 years in 1986. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with his family, deer hunting, wood working gardening and designing and constructing his "famous" magnets.
He is survived by his loving wife, Leona; two daughters, Bonnie (John) Lixey of East Tawas and Sharon (Phillip) Lighthiser of Lansing; grandchildren, Lisa (Jeff) Babe, Carrie Lixey and husband David Burkhart, BJ (Jamie) Kukuk and Amy Kukuk; great grandchildren, Jett and Justus Kukuk, Kase Mackie, Alexander and Sophia Babe. He is also survived by his sister, Delores (Stu) Stewart. Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Richard and Ronald; sister, Darlene McArdle; and great grandson, Dayton Kukuk.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of his life and memorial service on Wednesday, May 22 at 11 a.m. at Tawas United Methodist Church with Reverend Mary Gibson and Reverend Kenneth Tousley officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. A burial will take place immediately following the church service in East Tawas American Legion Cemetery with full military honors.
