Kum Priest Obituary

Kum Chu "KC" Priest, 63, of Oscoda passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Gulfport Memorial Hospital in Mississippi.
KC was born in Mokpo City, South Korea on Oct. 13, 1947. Her life in South Korea wasn't an easy one. Her parents passed away when she was young, leaving her and her brother to be cared for by her grandmother. KC had to stop attending school because it was too expensive and her family needed her to work to help take care of the family.
She married Mark Priest in 1972 and moved to the United States. They lived at Castle Air Force Base in California for three years and then the military moved the family to Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda, which KC called home for the last 34 years.
If anyone was an inspiration, it was KC. She came to the United States speaking minimal English. KC wanted so much to be able to communicate better that she taught herself English by watching TV. She had some firsts that she accomplished and was proud of while she lived in Oscoda, mostly due to her own drive and determination, but also with the love and encouragement of her friends and family. KC learned to drive, obtained her U.S. citizenship and her proudest feat was buying a house.
KC held a few different positions with different companies, but was primarily known as the face of the local Chinese restaurants. Her friendly smile and warm heart won over so many of the local residents. In addition to being a wonderful hostess and waitress over the years, KC loved to cook. Many said KC should have opened her own restaurant because her cooking was phenomenal. It wasn't uncommon for KC to host a get-together and cook for her friends. She was also known for the beautiful garden she maintained year after year.
KC is survived by her son, Anthony Priest of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter DeJohnna (Matthew) Muzzio of Biloxi, Miss; and grandchildren Leanne and Tyler.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. at 4807 Interlake Dr., Oscoda.
Arrangements were by Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, Biloxi. View and sign register book at www.bradfordokeefe.com.

I walked by several times while KC was outside working in her garden, she always had time to talk and explain to me all about her flowers. She invited me to come get starts of her flowers so I could also build a beautiful garden like she had. I never took the time to do that. I wish now I would have she was a very nice lady and I enjoyed talking to her. She will be missed, I'm so sorry for your loss.

So sad to hear the news of Kum passing. What a kind woman. We often spoke together about our children serving in the armed forces and she spoke of how proud she was of her children as I was of mine. I hope she is watching after my step son who also passed away June 7th. I will miss our little talks and her kindness.
