Marilyn E. (nee Embury) Speakman, age 79, of Oscoda died Dec. 2, 2013 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw.

Born June 23, 1934 at Enders, Neb., she lived for 16 years in Nehawka, Neb., where she graduated high school.
She moved to Oscoda 53 years ago and was retired after serving 37 years with Oscoda Area Schools. Other former jobs included waitress at Lakewood and the AuSable Inn and bartender at the Redwood Motor Lodge and Eagles Club.
Marilyn enjoyed gardening, yard work, reading and long walks with her dog, Izzie.
She is survived by her children, Cathy Jo (Wilson J.) Symansic of Jacksonville, Ark., Cheryl Ann (Steve) Jordan of Oscoda and Robert K. (Pamela) Speakman of Santa Clarita, Calif.; her mother, Ethel Embury of Denver, Colo.; brother Ronald (Sharon) Embury; sister-in-law Carolyn Embury; grandchildren James, Janette, Stacy, Steven, Anna and Robert; and great grandchildren Kirsten and Scarlett.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 at Buresh Funeral Home in Oscoda. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, also at Buresh Funeral Home, followed by a gathering at the Oscoda VFW Hall.
The family suggests memorial contributions to organizations working on a cure for cancer.
