Michael Patrick O'Connor, 61, born March 22, 1951, died Nov. 12, 2012 at his home in Hayes, Va.
Michael was a native of Oscoda and a retired United States Army 1SG with 21 years of service, including tours in Vietnam and Germany. He graduated with a B.S. from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
He was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather "Papa," always participating with his children and grandchildren in all their activities and was unselfishly dedicated to them. Michael was an avid model builder and could identify any airplane by sound as well as sight. He enjoyed reading, was a fan of the Detroit Lions, VT Hokies and the CNU Captains. Family and friends will miss his quiet strength and gentle caring, and remember him always.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Betty O'Connor, and twin brother, Daniel L. O'Connor.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia L. O'Connor; son Sean P. O'Connor and wife Rebecca; daughter Jennifer L. Salyers and husband Tom; brother John T. O'Connor and wife Sherri; sister Kathleen A. McCarthy; and two grandchildren who he dearly loved, James T. Salyers and Samantha L. Salyers.
A service of Christian funeral liturgy, officiated by the Rev. James Cowles, was held on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Gloucester, Va.
Interment with military honors followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery.

I am both schocked and saddened to learn of Mike's passing. I considered him a friend from our days in H.S. Mine and my family prayers go out to Patty and family.
