Richard George Benish of Tawas City, formerly of Brighton and South Lyon, passed away peacefully Friday, August 30, 2013 at his home under the loving care of his family and hospice, age 85 years.

Richard was born on Nov. 17, 1927 in Pontiac to Frank and Edna Viola (Allen) Benish. He graduated from East Tawas High School in 1946 and soon after he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served our country. After his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Richard worked for the Argus Camera Company in Ann Arbor for many years as a lens coder. He later worked for the South Lyon School district as well for several years.
Those who knew Richard will remember how he truly enjoyed reading and how crafty he was with his hands, always having to work on something. He married his best friend, Linda Sue (Brannon) on March 9, 1962 in Detroit, and together they celebrated 51 beautiful years of marriage.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Sue Benish of Tawas City; two loving children, Angela (David) Martin of Hawaii and Timothy Benish of Tawas City; eight grandchildren, Brandon, Ashley Adele, Candice, Caleb, Crystal, TJ, Nicholas and Rachael; one great granddaughter, Hailey; two sisters, Mary Ellen Krebs of Tawas City and Elizabeth Anne Nasser of Oak Park; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Edna Benish; one brother, Allen Frank Benish; and one sister-in-law, Wilma Benish.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Tawas United Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Gonder officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Military honors will take place at the church to recognize his military service. He will be entombed on Wednesday at Washtenong Memorial Park and Mausoleum. An on-line guest registry is available at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.
