Wonda Lemonovich Obituary

Wonda (Sutton) Lemonovich, who defied the convention of her day and entered the workforce as a Kresge sales associate after her lone child was in school and would later become a Kresge store manager in the Detroit area, died on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, in the Caretel Inn nursing facility in Linden. She was 84.
Mrs. Lemonovich resided in Hale following her 1982 retirement as manager of the Kmart in Lincoln Park, but had been at the Linden facility after developing health problems related to congestive heart failure last fall. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed by many friends as well.
Born in Pennsylvania, she married Alexander Lemonovich on June 16, 1944, while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy during World War II. The young couple, who became parents while he was still in the military, settled in Detroit, where Mr. Lemonovich built a new house in 1949 through the G.I. Bill.
With her husband's full support, Mrs. Lemonovich went to work for Kresge in 1953, then shifted to the company's first Kmart store in Garden City, when it opened eight years later. She was among the first asked when her employer began promoting women into its management ranks and, after initially declining, she accepted the manager's job at the Berkley store in 1972. She transferred to Lincoln Park in 1977.
She and "Papa," a mechanic with Standard Oil in Detroit until 1979, moved to Hale to get away from city life after her retirement; her set goal was "to forget everything I know about retail and enjoy being retired!" She enjoyed watching wildlife on their rural property and liked doing puzzles. She was a member of the Hale 1st United Methodist Church and the Hale Quilters Guild, having taken up quilting after retirement.
Mr. Lemonovich died in 1994, and daughter, Janet, preceded Wonda in death in 2003. Survivors include her son-in-law, Leonello Lividini; granddaughter, Davonna (David) Patch; grandson, David (Laura) Lividini; and great-granddaughters, Torine and Marina Lividini.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 29, at the Hale chapel of the Buresh-Bennett Funeral Home, 121 S. Washington, where the family received friends Thursday. Interment was in Esmond-Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. David K. Stewart Sr. officiated. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
