Herbert John Kobs, age 82, of East Tawas, former resident of Macomb County and Bay City, died on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Mid-Michigan Hospital in Midland.

He was born the son of Karl Otto and Mabel (nee Sloan) Kobs on July 10, 1931 in Tawas Township. Herb graduated from Tawas City High School in 1948. After graduation he joined the Navy and proudly served our country for four years.
On June 15, 1957 he married Shirley Seder in Birch Run, and together they shared 47 years of marriage. Herb was a self-employed land surveyor and semi retired in 1998, but found himself continuing to work and doing what he loved best, loving the land around him and learning the history of the Tawas area.
He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion and a life member of the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors. Herb was a huge fan of the Detroit Tigers he loved watching them and collecting memorabilia showing his love and passion for the Tigers. He enjoyed fishing, working with stain glass and took pride in building two cottages.
Herb is survived by his loving daughters, Debra (Robert) Fortner and Brenda (Lawrence) Russell; his brother, Gordon (Charlene) Kobs, sister-in-law, Fran Kobs; grandchildren, Jason, Emily, Alec, Christina and Carlene; and nine nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brother, Don Kobs.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at Emanuel Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. (instate at noon). Interment will follow in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City. Memorial contribution may be made to the American Legion.
