Katherine Charlotte (nee Reaman) Zellmer, age 93 of East Tawas, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014 at Lakeview Manor Healthcare Center in Tawas City surrounded by her family.
She was born in Yetter, Iowa, on Nov. 12, 1920 to Louis and Minna (nee Ristow) Reaman. After her family moved to Tawas City, she married Rev. Nelmar W. Zellmer in 1941. As America entered World War II, they moved to Portland, Ore. where her son, David, was born. They returned to Tawas in 1947.
She began a 21-year career at the Iosco Arenac Regional Library, becoming a reference librarian. Later she volunteered her time at St. Joseph Hospital, and as treasurer of the Iosco County Historical Museum and for the Iosco Medical Care Auxiliary. She was famous for her crocheted afghans, many of which were donated to worthy causes. She continued to crochet at Lakeview Manor.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Nelmar in 1976; her sister, Erna in 2011; and her brother-in-law, Clarence "Pete" Oates in 2011. She is survived by her son, David Zellmer and his wife Carol of Fresno, Calif.; and by her treasured sole granddaughter, Kirsten Zellmer and Kirsten's husband Charles Waite of El Cerrito, Calif.
She is also survived by a large extended family which includes her sister, Verna Oates and Verna's children, Jim Oates, Dennis Oates, Janice Humpula, JoAnn (David) Lutz and Carol (Matt) Jurczyk; and by her sister Erna's husband, Theodore "Ted" Trudell Jr. and their children, Elizabeth (Dennis) Southworth, Theodore (Margaret) Trudell III, Julie Trudell, Timothy Trudell, and Terry Trudell. There are also many great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City on Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tawas City. Her family will welcome friends at church on Thursday 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Interment will be in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Tawas City.
