Bernard Greenberg Obituary

Bernard GreenbergBernard "Bernie" Greenberg, age 83, of Hilton Head, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend known for his quick wit and kindness to others. Born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in Boston, MA, West Hartford, CT, and Syracuse, NY. Served in the U.S. Army in Japan, 1946-7. Graduate of New England College of Pharmacy. Spent 35 years with Bristol Myers Co., starting as a detail man and eventually founding and running Apothecon, Bristol's generic drug division. Upon retirement to Hilton Head in 1989, worked as consultant for Novo Nordisk and IMS Health. Served on the boards of directors of Mercer University College of Pharmacy and University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. In 2000, honored with the chain drug industry's highest pharmacy award, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores' Harold W. Pratt Award, the first individual from outside of a chain pharmacy company to be so honored. Volunteered at Hilton Head Hospital Endoscopy Department. Founding member of Congregation Beth Yam, Hilton Head. He never forgot where he came from, and was respectful to people no matter their position. He enjoyed travelling with his family, exploring new cities, and eating good food. Although having the opportunity to dine at some of the country's great restaurants, and enjoying them, he loved nothing more than a good bagel, take-out Chinese food, and a few minutes respite at Starbucks. He loved his work not because of the status he achieved, but because of the friends he made. He was enjoyable to spend time with in part due to a wit as funny as any comedian, but mostly because he cared about those with whom he came in contact. There was no greater support to have when support was needed, as he did not look away from pain or difficulty. Because he was always there for us, his friends and family will dearly miss him. Bernie is survived by his devoted wife, Nikki (Rosenberg); loving sister Arlene (Sherman) Berg of Boynton Beach, FL; beloved children Debbi Reed (fiancé Jack Resnick) of Hilton Head, Andrew (Beth Buckwalter) of Fayetteville, NY, and Peter (Jenifer Tyler) of Chicago, IL; and beloved grandchildren Ben and Clayton Reed, Hannah and Leah Greenberg. Donations may be made to Volunteers In Medicine, Hospice of the Low Country or Congregation Beth Yam. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Beth Yam at 2PM on Friday, November 2, with a reception to follow at the Cypress Clubhouse. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. www.the islandfuneralhome.com.
