Herkner, Joyce Lattal
Joyce Lattal Herkner Joyce Lattal Herkner, 72, of Hilton Head Island, died on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at her home on Hilton Head, surrounded by family. Joyce was born on January 10, 1943 in Perth Amboy New Jersey to Celestian and Margaret Lattal. She graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1960. Joyce then attended Bucknell University, where in 1964 she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She also received many academic awards including: membership into Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor society that recognizes excellence among freshman women; membership into Phi Sigma, an honor society for students of biological sciences; membership into Pi Mu Epsilon, the U.S. Honorary National Mathematics Society and membership into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. It was at Bucknell where Joyce met her husband Doug. They married and lived together in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. After a brief stint as a medical researcher, Joyce spent the next couple of decades concentrating on being a wonderful mother, friend and teacher to her two children and the best wife anyone could have. During those years, Joyce spent many hours taking her daughter to horse shows where she mastered the art of Parallel parking a bumper pull horse trailer. Who would have thought that a city girl from Perth Amboy, who knew nothing about horses would become the best horse mom in the world. When her children went to college, Joyce worked for Exxon where she managed transportation and scheduling of oil tankers. It was a job she found most interesting as she learned about middle eastern countries. After 30 years in Basking Ridge, Doug and Joyce relocated to Hilton Head, SC, where she started her own sewing and decorating business. Joyce was known as a perfectionist. She would do over an entire job because she saw a flaw in her work. (Which, by the way, no one else would have noticed.) Never one to stop learning, Joyce taught herself how to use a computer embroidery machine. She was also a master of hand embroidery. Joyce was chosen by the Colonial Williamsburg Costume and Design Center to hand-stitch the embroidery for the coat worn by Pocahontas on her 400th wedding anniversary celebration. Mrs. Herkner is survived by her husband of 49 years, Doug; two children, Mick and Joelle; a grandson, Beckham (Kauffman); and her brother, Gerald Lattal. Services arrangements are pending. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Volunteers in Medicine, 15 Northridge Dr., Hilton Head, SC 29926.
