Charles Taliano Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Taliano Jr. Sgt T (Rose Garden DI) died in his home in the loving arms of his family Friday 4 June 2010. Charles (Chuck) Anthony Taliano Jr. was born Cleveland, Ohio 9 May 1945. After having been educated mostly in parochial schools, he left a small community college and enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1963, and reported for recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina in February 1964. Upon completion of basic training and advanced infantry training, PFC Taliano was assigned to 2nd Bn 10th Marines , 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune North Carolina. While serving with Hq Battery, 2/10 Supply, he deployed with Division to Santo Domingo, during the Dominican Republic crisis, in May 1965. Selected for Drill Instructor school, Corporal Taliano completed training and was assigned to Drill Instructor duty, May 1966 at Parris Island. He served with D Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion (same unit he trained with as a recruit) the entire tour, except for a three-month assignment as a drown proofing instructor at the base swimming pool. During April 1968, one of several photos taken of Sergeant Taliano while he was picking up a new Platoon was subsequently used in a Marine Corps recruiting campaign. We Don't Promise You a Rose Garden, the Marines are Looking For a Good Men has become a collector's item. The Rose Garden Drill Instructor and his recruit image remains popular today. Sergeant Taliano was released from active duty May 1968 and Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps, November 1969, completing his six-year military obligation. During the next thirty-three years, Mr. Taliano held executive sales and marketing positions with several book publishers, including vice-president, sales and marketing Simon & Schuster, Inc., Putnam Publishing Group, E. P. Dutton, Inc., and Grolier Publishing Company. The last six years Taliano was self-employed as an independent contractor in sales and marketing for the publishing and gift product industry. At the end of 2001, Mr. Taliano retired from Publishing, and relocated from New Jersey to the Beaufort, SC area. Mr. Taliano served on the Board of Directors of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society, and since the end of 2002, he managed the Historical Society Gift Shop. Chuck was a Life Member of the MCL Yellow Footprint Detachment, Beaufort, SC, a member of the MCL Phillip K. Dorn Detachment, Leonardo NJ, a member of the MODD of the Marine Corps League, a PUFL member of the American Legion and the USMC Drill Instructor Association. Mr. Taliano is survived by his sister Michaelene Taliano of Seven Hills Ohio, two children; daughter, Dr. Kimberly Taliano of Cary, NC and son, Michael Taliano along with daughter-in-law, Danielle and two grandsons, Charles III and Michael James all of Hackettstown, NJ and his former wife, Mercedes Auger of Cary, NC. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 8, from 5:30-7:30 at Anderson Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at 10:30am at The Depot Chapel on Parris Island. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Dr., Suite 206, N. Semper Fi! I stare at your signed poster daily to give me motivation. A great Marine.

June 18, 2010

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of this fine Marine. I was fortunate to be in the 1st platoon of recruits in May of 66 that he trained. I will never forget that he was the only one of our three DI's with compassion. Tough yes, but also fair. Its been 44 years since I boarded the bus to leave PI but I still remember Chuck standing there rendering a salute to us as we pulled away. God Bless and Semper Fi! Rusty DeRoma, Sgt,1966-1969 Boston, Ma.

Chuck, you have been and still are a great friend. Diane & I have learned so much from you and have been honored to have worked on so many projects with you developing products for the Marines. Excellence has always been your only option. Our times together and adventures on the road will stay with us both in our hearts. I will carry your coin in my pocket forever and take solace in knowing that you are in a far better place. Your honor and humility has always been inspirational. Your amazing career in the publishing business and all that you have known and worked with would astound most people. Your dedication to the museum shop at Parris Island was a tribute to your love for the Corps and a sense of duty that few would ever begin to understand. Your volunteer work at Bethesda and around the country was often unknown. Chuck, your life was a bright example for all of us. God Bless.

I am honored to say that I was a close friend of Chuck's during his publishing years. He was one of the most compassionate, caring, and talented people I have ever known. (he was also great fun to be around!) Chuck was deeply committed to the Marine Corps, and he exemplified the best qualities in the way he lived his life. I feel so lucky to have been his friend for many years, and I send my condolences to his family on the loss of such a wonderful and irreplaceable person.

As a fellow Monmouth County Marine I had the honor of meeting Sgt T on several occasions and treasure a small autographed copy of the "rose garden" poster that he once gave me. I think he truly inspired every Marine he met to be "once a Marine, always a Marine" by living that ethos himself... a credit to our Corps. Semper Fidelis, Sgt T... you will be missed.

Dear Chuck's family,
You are so lucky to have such a celebrated good Marine in your Dad, Brother, ex-husband and all.
How great he was. How much he did for so many especially consoling former Marine families of 9-11 victims. He went above and beyond. Now, I believe, he is above and beyond watching over you all, peacefully and pain free.
I was blessed by his dear friendship for the last 30 years after he hired me at Dial/Delacorte Press. I will miss him dearly.
