Carmen Wielich Mertens, 97, died peacefully at home on January 20 after a brief illness. Loving mother to Diane Bulkley, Patricia Beckwith, Victoria Thorman, mother-in-law to Jack Bulkley, Stephen Beckwith and Walter "Buzz" Thorman and adoring grandmother to Victoria Banks, Amanda Oakley, David and Charlotte Beckwith, Ashley Warren, James and Amanda Thorman, greatgrandmother to seven and sister to Dorothy O'Connell of Chapel Hill, NC. She was a devoted wife of 55 years to the late William Mertens, New York Acting State Supreme Court Justice, former district attorney and lawyer. She graduated from the Lenox School and attended Finch College. Throughout her life she was an active and enthusiastic participant in many volunteer organizations including the Alumnae Board of Finch College, the Bargain Box in Hilton Head and Miriam's Attic at The Osborn. She treasured her relationships with family and friends and relished the time she spent with them. Carmen, born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was a resident of New York City for most of her life and lived in Hilton Head, SC for 25 years until her move to The Osborn in Rye in 2007. A memorial service will be held at The Osborn on March 16.
