Guadalupe "Lupe" Herrera
Of Ontario, California passed away on April 22, 2013 at the age of 94. He was surrounded by his family at San Antonio Community Hospital.
Lupe was born on December 12, 1918 in Fort Hancock, Texas. The oldest of three children, he also lived in New Mexico before coming to Cucamonga, then finally settling in Ontario, California in 1954. A veteran of World War II, he had enlisted in the army before the war had started and drove a tank for the Sixth Armored Division during a tour in Europe, where he was referred to as "Frank." After the war had ended, he began his lifelong and passionate career working as an aircraft mechanic until he retired in 1986 with Aerojet-General. He was the loving father of six children and had just celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife Reina on April 18th.
A member of St. George Catholic Church in Ontario, Lupe was loved by anyone who had ever met him. He could make a friend anywhere he went and could always be counted on to make someone laugh with a joke or his sage wisdom, such as "Don't take any wooden nickels." He was an avid baseball fan, an attentive gardener, and an American hero. Above all else, he loved to be surrounded by his family and friends.
Lupe is survived by his loving wife, Reina Herrera; daughter Lupita Ramirez and her husband Robert; son John Herrera and his wife Dianne; son Larry Herrera; daughter Martha Cortez and her husband David; daughter Tina Tucker and her husband David; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sisters Ruth Vargas and Natividad Guerra, and his daughter Mary Ann Martinez.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Stone Funeral Home, 355 E. 9th Street, Upland. To my Daughter Dianne and the Herrera family: There are no words to ease the pain of the loss of a loved one. I know from personal experience, just know you have my heart-felt sympathy.
