A 35-year resident of the San Gabriel Valley, and a 50-year veteran of the typography, pre-press and printing industries, Art passed away on Saturday at age 68 after a two-week battle with cancer.
Art was born to Arthur and Marion Paquette of Los Angeles, and was soon followed by his brothers Carl and Charlie, and his sister Sally. He graduated from Washington Prep in 1963.
Art began his typography career at Typographic Service, and learned printing while working for Saul Marks at The Plantin Press.
Art started his own business, Aldus Type Studio, in 1972, with his brother Carl and his partners Dick Schaffer and Kenny Grinkey. Aldus went on to be one of the largest typography businesses on the West Coast, before shifting its focus to Macintosh and pre-press services in 1990. Aldus merged with MGTL in 1997, and Art stayed on to manage the business until shortly before his death.
Art married his wife Bonnie in 1973, and they remained together for over 40 years. They had a son Aaron in 1977, and a daughter Nicole in 1981. The family moved to San Marino in 1979, and lived there until 2000, when Art and Bonnie moved to San Gabriel. Despite his long work hours, Art was a tireless volunteer for his kids' schools and co-curricular activities, most notably Carver Elementary, SMHS Grad Night and Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.
Art inspired us all with his work ethic, loyalty, patience, wisdom and humor. He loved a good book, an old movie, a glass of wine, a well-tended yard and car, and a delicious meal.
Art is survived by his wife, children, mother and siblings, as well as his stepmother Esther; his son-in-law Cliff Willingham; Cliff's kids, Leslie Powell and Jordan Willingham; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held on Saturday, September 21st at 10:00am at Cabot & Sons, 300 Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena. (626) 793-7159. In lieu of flowers, Art requested donations to Children's Home Society at www.chs-ca.org
