Carole Ann Shaw White
74, of Upland, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on March 18, 2013 after a year-long struggle with mesothelioma. Carole was born February 8, 1939 in Lima, OH. She grew up in Elizabeth, NJ where she graduated from Batten High School. She earned her B.S. in Biology at Marietta College in Ohio where she met the love of her life and best friend, her husband William (Bill) White, whom she married after her graduation July 2, 1960 in Cleveland, OH. Carole and Bill lived briefly in Pittsburgh where their two children William (Billy) and Stacey were born.
In 1965, Carole and Bill moved to Diamond Bar, CA where they met several neighbors who would become life-long friends. They moved to Upland in 1969. Carole earned her teaching credential from Cal Poly, Pomona in 1972. She taught elementary school at Foothill Knolls and Magnolia schools in Upland, retiring after 35 years. Carole was deacon at First Presbyterian Church where she was also a committed volunteer in the homework club and knitting group, knitting blankets and caps for newborns. Carole enjoyed family vacations in Hawaii, and skiing in Big Bear and Park City. She actively embraced retirement, surrounded by her many friends going to movies, serving meals to the homeless, playing canasta, stamping and making beautiful cards. She had a special fondness for her many dogs. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandsons, making their favorite sprinkle cookies and macaroni and cheese or cheering them on at volleyball, hockey, baseball and basketball games.
Carole is survived by her husband, Bill; son Billy and his wife, Kathy, of Pasadena; daughter Stacey White Kinney and her husband, Dave, grandchildren Dylan (15) and Parker (11) of San Juan Capistrano; and her brother David Shaw of New Jersey and Florida. A celebration of Carole's life will take place on Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Upland.
