Clara Catherin Gates Bryan, 88, of Bakersfield, CA, passed from this life on Monday, March 4, 2013, following a prolonged illness. She was born in Earlsboro, OK, in 1924 and relocated to California soon after World War II. She married W. J. Bryan, who was a PFC in the Army Air Corps, on August 7, 1943, in Yukon, OK. She was widowed after 37 years of marriage. Clara lived as a wife, mother, and housewife in Etiwanda, CA, from 1956 to 1998. While there, she attended Chaffey College to become an LVN, spent her entire nursing career at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, CA, and retired about 1986. With a deep and abiding love of God, she had a peaceful, nurturing nature, a profound faith in the Gospel, and raised her four children to love God. She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Pauls Valley and Yukon, OK, Fontana, CA, and Bakersfield, CA.
Clara is survived by one sister, Vera Gates-Troutman of Upland, CA, who worked alongside her in the hospital; two sons, David Bryan of Bakersfield, CA, and Russell Bryan of Hesperia, CA; two daughters, Wanda Baker of Anderson, CA, and Carole Hardcastle of Bakersfield, CA; eight grandchildren, Bryan Baker of Redding, CA, Shellie Baker-Anderson of Susanville, CA, Melissa Bryan-Ingraham of Austin, TX, Thomas Barrett of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Elizabeth Barrett-Monson of Tehachapi, CA, and Rebecca, Erin, and Josh Bryan of Hesperia, CA; eight great-grand- children, Nathan and Michael Baker of Redding, CA, Campbell Ingraham of Austin, TX, Hannah and Matthew Barrett of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Steven Brass Jr. of Bakersfield, CA, Jacob Brass of Fort Riley, KS, and Daniel Brass of Tehachapi, CA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m., with a service starting at 2:00 p.m., at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane in Bakersfield, CA.
