Joanne Marilyn Porter
October 27, 1930 - January 2, 2014

Joanne Marilyn (Lewis) Porter, 83, passed away at her home on January 2, 2014, in West Covina, CA, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Oxnard, CA, on October 27, 1930, to Fred and Clara Lewis. Marilyn, a very accomplished musician, was the organist at Covina United Methodist Church in Covina, CA, playing the pipe
organ, for 36 years. She is a long-time member of the American Guild of Organists and enjoyed meeting and visiting with the other members who had these special talents.

To the enjoyment of the congregation, she quietly and consistently did her magnificent job of accompanying the choir and offering her rendering of beautiful organ and piano music in the two church services every Sunday. In her lifetime, she has accompanied many different groups and choirs in many places in Southern California; among them Ynez Grammar School, Mark Keppel High School and Pasadena City College, Gladstone High School, and Cameron Secondary School.

She is survived by her son, Mark Allen Porter, daughter, B. Jane Crossett and husband, 4 grandchildren, and sister, Doris McElheny and husband. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Porter, who passed away in 1991 and by her parents, Fred and Clara Lewis.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of her life will be held at Covina United Methodist Church, 437 San Bernardino Rd, Covina, CA 91723, at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 25, 2014. If desired, donations may be sent to Covina United Methodist Church. An on-line Website is available at to post comments and condolences.
