Grech, John Edward
John Edward Grech passed away peacefully on March 29, 2013.
He was born February 16, 1914 in Easthampton, Mass., the son of John Andrew Grech and Anna Grech (Babic), immigrants from Czechoslovakia. He moved to Los Angeles with his mother and two younger sisters at the age of 10 to join his father who had worked his way across America the previous year and had found employment in Los Angeles.
John graduated from high school at the age of 16 and entered college but had to suspend his college studies due to the Great Depression and the need to find work to help support his family. He found work at a bank during which time he was able to continue his college studies part time, ultimately graduating from U.S.C. with a degree in Business Administration.
It was during this time that he met his future wife, Winifrid who was the love of his life and predeceased him in 2002. Seeing a lack of opportunities for advancement at the bank, he took a new job as the assistant manager of the student store at Eagle Rock High School which he later managed. He also obtained his real estate license during this period and worked part time as a real estate agent with his father-in-law in Los Angeles.
He moved to Altadena in 1950 after building a home for his family and another one next door for his wife's parents. At that time he opened his own real estate office, John E. Grech & Associates which became one of the largest real estate brokerage firms in Pasadena during the 1960's with approximately 40 agents and its own escrow department. John also obtained an insurance license and provided insurance services to his clients along with income tax services. John twice served as President of the Pasadena Association of Realtors, served for many years as a Director of the National Association of Realtors and the California Association of Realtors, was active for many years in the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club
of Pasadena and held leadership positions in all of those organizations.
John was also an educator who taught business and real estate classes at the community college level and real estate classes for many years at the Pasadena Association of Realtors. He was also a licensed contractor, developed several residential projects and was an all around Jack of All Trades.
John was highly admired and respected by his friends and colleagues and always took time to be of service to them when they sought his advice. John was a devoted husband and he lovingly cared for his wife when she became ill, including many years when she was an invalid. He was also a devoted father, grandfather and uncle. He is survived by his son, John G. Grech, his grandchildren Peter Ganibi (Jaye), Jennifer Grech and Katherine Grech, several nieces and nephews, and other extended family members. Interment services will be private but a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 at the Gamble Lounge at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Donations in his memory may be made to The Salvation Army or the
