Michael John Kelly
Surrounded by family and friends in his Yucaipa home, Mr. Kelly passed away on June 16, 2013. His lengthy struggle with cancer had caused his premature retirement from his 27 year teaching career with the Redlands Unified School District just a week prior to his passing.
Mike Kelly was a devoted family man who is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Dava, and his daughters Michelle Spencer of Yucaipa and Megan Bunnell of Highland. He is also survived by his parents, George and Leone Kelly of Redlands, brother Chuck Kelly of Calimesa, and sisters Lynn Lowry and Suzi Meier, both of Redlands. He was predeceased by sister Mary Kelly of Millbridge, Maine. Mike had an extended family of relatives, in-laws, friends and former students who provided him great joy and comfort both before and during his illness.
Born on May 18, 1954 in Milwaukee, WI, Mike moved with the Kelly family to Anaheim, California in 1960, and then to Redlands in 1965. He was on the RHS swim and water polo teams for three years prior to his graduation in 1972. He received a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Biology from UC Santa Barbara in 1977, as well as a teaching credential in 1978. After several years as an insurance agent, Mike answered his lifelong calling to become an educator, joining the Redlands High School faculty in 1985, teaching science classes and coaching swimming and water polo. Mike moved to Redlands East Valley High School when it first opened in the fall of 1997, once more teaching science classes, sharing coaching duties for swimming and water polo when asked, and acting as faculty advisor to several student clubs. He remained at REV until his retirement shortly before his death.
Mr. Kelly enjoyed a lengthy affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America, earning the Eagle award at 16, and the Silver Beaver award as an adult. He had a life-long love of the outdoors, hiking, biking and camping in the San Bernardino Mountains. He and wife Dava (also a REV science teacher) enjoyed many long RV/canoeing trips during their summer vacations.
A Memorial Mass is planned for 10:00 AM on Friday, June 28, at Holy Name of Jesus Church (formerly Sacred Heart) in Redlands. It will be followed by lunch and a celebration of Mike's life in Forest Falls Picnic Area. All of Mike's family, friends, associates and former students are warmly invited to attend both events. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michael Kelly Memorial Account, c/o Principal John Maloney, Redlands East Valley High School, 31000 E.
