Obituary Condolences

Doris Mae Lewis
Doris Mae Lewis, 94, longtime Ontario resident was welcomed into Heaven on Monday, October 14, 2013. Doris was born on May 14, 1919, in Pennsylvania to Elmer and Barbara Weiss. When she was four years old, the family moved to Pasadena, California, and then to West Los Angeles where Doris attended Selby Avenue School, graduated from University High School and then enrolled in classes at UCLA.
Doris had a beautiful soprano singing voice and, while singing in a quartet at the University Bible Church near UCLA, she met her future husband, Clark Lewis. The two married on August 14, 1939, and moved to Ontario where Clark was teaching at Ontario Junior High School.
A devout Christian, Doris attended the First Baptist Church of Ontario, and later became a founding member of Sierra Vista Baptist Church in Alta Loma. She was very active in church music programs as a choir member and soloist and participated in various service groups through her church and community. She was an early member of the Ramblers Club, a local women's study group. Most of all, Doris was devoted to her husband, family, and home. She proudly cared for their house and garden. Her talent as a seamstress was evident in the clothing she fashioned for herself, her daughters and her granddaughter. She enjoyed traveling, both the early family road trips and the later international trips she and Clark took following his retirement. But, she was always most content in the home that she and Clark designed and built in 1940 and lived in for 60 years.
Doris was preceded in death by Clark Lewis, her husband of 65 years and her infant great grandson, Morty Hogerheiden. She is survived by her daughters Susan Huie and her husband John of Claremont, and Sharon Lewis of Paso Robles; grandson Evan Huie, his wife Tiffany, and great granddaughter and namesake, Vivian Mae Huie, of Monrovia; granddaughter Megan Hogerheiden and her husband Jon of La Verne; brother Raymond Weiss and his family; and niece Lynn Lewis.
Doris's family wishes to thank the staff at Pilgrim Place Health Services Center in Claremont for their loving care during the last year of her life. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, at Bellevue Cemetery in Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris's memory to Pilgrim Place Health Services Center, 721 West Harrison Avenue, Claremont, CA 91711 or a .
