Ethel Mae (Burris) Mackay

Ethel Mae (Burris) Mackay was born on November 1, 1918 in Vian, Oklahoma and passed away on October 11, 2012. She was one of five children of Rev. L.D. and Donetta Burris. She studied Spanish in college and became an FBI agent catching spies on the Mexican border during WWII. She married Rev. Donald Mackay in 1950, and had two daughters, Jannie Mackay and Mary Mackay Webster. When Donald died unexpectedly, she became a teacher and counselor in both Tulsa, Oklahoma, and later at Long Beach Unified. After retirement she loved to travel, volunteer, attend church, sing, and spend time with her grandchildren, Angela, Brian, and Michael. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ethel Mae Mackay Scholarship at the Long Beach City College Foundation, 4901 E. Carson St., Long Beach, CA 90808, (562) 938-4134.
