Lantry, Fr. Jerome (James)

Fr. Jerome (James) Lantry of the Immaculate Conception, OCD, died on April 16, 2013. He was born on February 7, 1920, in Lusmagh, County Offaly, Ireland, to Michael and Ellen Lantry. He attended St. Cronan's primary school and then the Carmelite College in Castlemartyr, County Cork. He entered the Anglo- Irish Province of the Discalced Carmelites as a teenager; made his First Profession on September 2, 1940; was ordained on July 14, 1946; and was transferred to the United States in the 60's. Fr. Jerome held many positions of responsibility, including Provincial of both the Anglo-Irish Province as well as what would later become the California-Arizona Province. To the end of his life, he was hard at work in the "Vineyard of the Lord," teaching, celebrating the Sacraments, and helping immensely at St. Therese Church, to which he had been assigned since September 1994. Fr. Jerome suffered through his final health issues with determination and optimism, giving all who knew him a great example of the virtue of fortitude. Fr. Jerome is survived by one sister-in-law Sarah Lantry, three nieces, and two nephews. His siblings (all deceased) were Mary, Patrick, Margaret, and Michael. Fr. Jerome's funeral services will take place at St. Therese Church, 1100 East Alhambra Road, Alhambra, as follows: Viewing beginning at 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 25, followed by the Vigil Rites and Rosary at 7:30 p.m.; Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, April 26, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Discalced Carmelite House of Studies, PO Box 260, Mt. Angel, OR 97362
