Mabel Porter Obituary

Mabel M. Colvin Porter, 91, passed away Nov. 18, 2002 in Benson, AZ she was born August 2, 1911 in Ft. Thomas, Arizona. Mabel and her husband Howard came to Calif. in 1932 during the Great Depression, to work in the area citrus groves. They ultimately settled in Ontario, where Mabel resided until 1979, when she returned to Arizona to live near one of her daughters. Mabel spent 35 years as a homemaker and mother to her five chi ldren. When Howard's health forced him to retire, Mabel went to work in an Ontario garment factory until her own retirement. She is survived by her two sons; Garth Howard Porter of La Puente, and Melvyn John Porter of Ontario; two daughters, Karen Porter Preston of St. David AZ, and Kathy Porter Kinnick of Chino. She was preceded in death by her husband John Howard Porter in 1975, and her eldest daughter, Gleora Porter Cathcart in 2000. Mabel had 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mabel was an accomplished seamstress who could make any sort of clothing. If her own family were not in need of new clothing, she would seek out needy families and sew free clothing for them. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, baking, reading, and crosswords. She served in many capacities in her church, including the women's Relief Society, and the children's Primary organizations. Her life was one of service to others. Services will be held Nov. 23, 2002 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in St. David, AZ. A graveside ceremony and internment will be on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. at Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario.
