Paul "Sonny" Olivera
82, passed away Monday, September 30, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. "Sonny" was born May 26, 1931 to Paul and Concetta (Spallone) Olivera at Timkin Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio. He attended Timkin Vocational High School, becoming a Carpenter Apprentice.
In 1953 he moved to California with his wife (Alongina) and started working at Kaiser Steel. He then began a 25 year career with the City of Ontario as a Building Official. He retired from the city in 1976 and began a career as a real estate developer. He and his partners (Forecast Corporation) built many residential and commercial properties in the Inland Empire. In 1994 he retired and spent most of his time in Newport Beach, hanging out at the Ritz with his buddies. He loved holding court and playing gin in the back patio. Paul had a 50 year affinity for collecting books and had many friends that looked to him for knowledge on upcoming sporting events. Above all else he enjoyed BBQ's and spending time with his family.
Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alongina; his brother David Olivera; his three children Joni (Frank) Flaherty, Paul (Diane) Olivera and Carla (Lance) Berry; his grandchildren Brandie, Carly, Gina, Megan, Kristina, Rachel and Sonny; his great-grandchildren Caleb, Cameron, Cole, Grant and Mia.
The family would like to thank the Kaiser Medical family for all their compassion and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in care of Megan Berry, 3415 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Suite #550 Los Angeles, CA 90034 including Olivera on the memo line.
A funeral mass will be held at noon on Friday, October 4th at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Upland.
