Ann passed away in Harbor City, California on November 8, 2012 due to complications from pneumonia. She was born in Seattle on March 17, 1942 to parents Rex and Isabella (Hutchison) Hadfield. Having graduated Seattle's Roosevelt High School in 1960 she attended Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham, WA before marrying Bruce Friden at Lake City Presbyterian Church in 1965. She had fond memories of the few years they lived in Boise, Idaho before finally settling in Long Beach, California where they raised two sons. Ann was a long-time employee of the LBUSD where she worked as a school secretary at both Hughes and Edison schools, but her first love was her family, especially her children, Charles and Timothy. To say that Ann was passionate about plants and flowers would be an understatement since she spent countless time over her life tending to her beautiful gardens-she received many a compliment on her fruit trees and rose bushes. Ann was blessed to be a grandmother three times over and to make an annual visit to upstate New York every year to visit her grandchildren for the holidays and to watch them grow up; she was so very proud of them. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Rex and Isabella, as well as by Bruce, her husband of thirty-five years. As a widow she was dedicated to charitable causes, notably the Lions Club and Memorial Women's Hospital League, where she was fond of participating in the 'Books for Babies' program. She loved God and she loved her country, giving charitably to such patriotic causes as the USO, VFW, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Wounded Warrior Project. Her final years were spent in the company of her son and her beloved cats, Nicky and Delilah. As frail as she became she still closely followed the news and never neglected to put out holiday decorations. Ann left an indelible mark on all those she encountered - if life is truly about loving and being loved then her seventy years here were a glowing success. Ann is survived by her brothers, Joel (Dana) and John (Linda), sons Charles (Kathleen) and Timothy and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Emily. Her interment ceremony was held on November 19, 2012 at Acacia Memorial Park on a cold and rainy Monday in Seattle. A local service will be held Sunday, December 2, 12:00pm - 3:00pm at the Historical Society of Long Beach - 4260 Atlantic Ave. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obituaries.
