Eugene Francis "Gene" Earl
88, passed away at home on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
He was born to the late Frank and Viola Earl, on October 9, 1924 in Pensacola, Florida. Gene spent his childhood in Florida and Minnesota before relocating to San Diego, California in his teens. He graduated from Hoover High School in San Diego, California in 1942. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II from June 25, 1942 to December 8, 1945. He served on the U.S.S. Tangier and the U.S.S. Currituck and was very proud to be in the same war as his father, a career U.S. Navy officer. After the war he worked for the San Diego Tribune which launched his journalism career. He later became a sports editor for the Progress Bulletin and then moved on to the L.A. Times as a city editor for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. He spent the remaining part of his career at The Daily Report before retiring in 1991.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorene Dorothy Earl, his 3 children: Michael (Lenda), Kathy, Len (Bob) and his step-daughter Nancy (Guy). He also leaves behind, his 8 grandchildren: Chris, Gia, Greg, Dian, Aly, Dereick, Andrea (Kevin) and Levi (Susy) and one great-granddaughter Alexandra and a sister Delores Smith.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday June 12, 2013 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Draper Mortuary, 811 North Mountain Ave, Ontario, CA 91762. Services will be held Thursday June 13, 2013, 11:00am at Draper Mortuary followed by graveside service at Bellevue Memorial Park, 1240 West G Street, Ontario, CA 91762.
