Janet Van Kessel
Former Los Angeles County resident, Janet Van Kessel died on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA. She was 87 years of age. Janet was born in Spokane, Washington. She studied drama at the University of Washington and was a member of the University's traveling theatre group. While at UW, Janet met and married Dick York, a WWII Veteran. They moved to Southern California and started a family. They had four children under the age of 6 and expecting their fifth child when Dick was killed in a traffic accident. Widowed, Janet raised her 5 children in Pomona. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Assumption church in Claremont where her children attended catholic school. She met and married Howard Van Kessel. The family moved to Tuolumne County. Janet was an accomplished bridge player who attained the status of Life Master. She loved family gatherings, traveling, visiting with friends and playing cards. Mrs. Van Kessel is survived by 6 children - Gordon Van Kessel , Vicki Kennedy, Duke York, Dan York, Jody Hamabata and Dr. Katie Van Kessel; 19 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren. Janet is preceded in death by her parents Daniel and Lucile Walker, husbands Howard Van Kessel and Dick York, and daughter Mary Beth York. A Celebration of life and memorial mass will be held in the summer of 2014.
