LEON, CECILIA A.  
Cecilia A. Leon, 63, of Calexico, CA passed away on Monday, July 20, 2015. Cecilia was born on January 5, 1952 in Calexico, CA. She married Arthur V. Leon on March 1975 in Calexico, CA. Cecilia was a Dental Assistant for Dr. Richard Farrell. She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother and sister. Cecilia was very thoughtful, loving and had a great sense of humor. As a close knit family we are all at a tremendous loss. We will miss her dearly. Please keep her in your prayers. Mom, may you rest in peace with our loving dad for all eternity. She is survived by her sons, Arturo Leon Jr. and Eric David Leon; daughter, Karina Yvette Leon; grandchildren, Isabela Leon, Christian Leon, Mateo Leon and Aaron Leon; brothers, David T. Acuna Jr., Luis T. Acuna and Vicente M. Acuna; sisters, Dolores A. Lepe, Lupe T. Acuna and Esperanza A. Aguilar; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 6 to 9 p.m. with rosary from 7 to 9 p.m., at Hems Brothers Mortuary in Calexico. Service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 9 a.m. with Father Moreno officiating at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Calexico. Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 8 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

LOPEZ, RAFAEL "BARRAGAN"  
Rafael is survived by his beloved wife Ignacia; daughters, Alegria and Raquel; grandchildren, Seth and Sebastian; brothers, Arturo, Raul, and Jose-Angel "RIP" ; sisters Rosalinda, Rocio and Eva. As well as countless other family members and friends. Rafael was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and moved to El Centro in 1950, graduated from Central Union High School in 1964, and then went on to serve his country in the Army, from 1964 to 1986, as a helicopter mechanic and equal employment opportunity liaison. He fought in the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1972, and was also stationed in Korea, Germany, and in many other units throughout the U.S. Rafael was awarded several medals throughout his years of service and retired a Sergeant First Class E-7. After retiring with the Army he went on to be a leader within the community of El Centro, serving as a supervisor for the USDA-RD for nineteen years. Through his work within the community he was able to award local small businesses and families the loans needed to turn their dreams into reality. He was a man of many hobbies and talents, some of which included painting, singing, collecting, and being an avid reader. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, but more than anything he loved creating memories with the time spent with his family and friends. Our hearts sit heavy as God has gained another Angel. We ask that you join us to celebrate his life on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Hems Brothers Mortuary from 6 to 9 p.m. Mass will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church at 10 a.m.

LOW, STEPHEN CLYDE  
Stephen Clyde Low will be sorely missed by his family and friends who knew him as a warm and funny guy who faced his health setbacks with courage and a positive outlook. He was born May 30, 1959 in Powell, Wyoming and died July 18, 2015 in San Diego, CA. Steve moved with his family from Big Piney, Wyoming to El Centro in August, 1967. He attended El Centro schools and was a stand-out athlete at Central Union High School where he lettered in three sports and was awarded the Try Dowell Memorial Award in his senior year for his athletic abilities. He became a heavy equipment operator in the Imperial Valley and continued in that occupation for many years in San Diego. Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Pat Low; and last year, by his father, Otto Low. He is survived by his life-partner of 23 years, Charlene Amator; his step-mother, Judy Low; his sisters, Pam (Cliff) Kirkpatrick and Cindy (Mike) Pacheco; three nephews; one niece; two great-nieces; and one great-nephew. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the American Cancer Society at 400 S. 8th St., El Centro, CA. Private services will be held on August 1, 2015 in San Diego.

OMLIN, KAMILL D. BURGESS  
Kamill D. Burgess Omlin, 60, of Wellton, AZ passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2015. Kamill was born on November 27, 1954 in Calexico, CA. She graduated from Holtville High School in 1972. Kami retired in 2011 to Wellton, AZ with her husband Bob after a successful career as an Office Manager in the Power Construction Industry. They were able to enjoy the pleasures of traveling and the company of friends and loved ones. She will always be remembered for her great sense of humor, strength and love for people. Kami valued more than anything spending time with her family and was always eager to help and care for all. She is survived by her husband, Robert Burgess; son, Wes Federico (Betsy); daughters, Lisa Elam Federico (Josh), Shannon Carlson Burgess and Erin Burgess; grandchildren, Tatum Carlson, Evan Federico, Alexis and Justin Elam; parents Joe and Roberta Omlin; sisters, Cheryl Rhea and family, Kathy Omlin and family, Susan Garcia and family; brother, Mike Omlin and family. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10 a.m. for the public and at 9 a.m. for family, at the Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematory in Yuma, AZ. Please respect, private cremation and private reception.

Ernest Perez, 68, of Vista, CA passed away Tuesday, July 14. He was born May 8, 1947 in Calipatria and was married to Norma Castaneda on April 12, 1971 in Brawley. Visitation will be held at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley on Friday, July 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Mass, officiated by Father Bernardo Lara, is scheduled for Saturday, August 1 at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brawley. Ernie will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery following Mass. He was preceded in death by his parents Pedro and Rosie Perez; sister, Anita E. Zavala; and brother, Pete E. Perez. Ernie is survived by his wife, Norma C. Perez; son, Randy Perez; daughter, Emily Perez Wright; brother, Bill (Rebecca) Perez; mother-in-law, Maria Castaneda; sisters-in-law, Irene C. Mendez and Estella Castaneda; brothers-in-law, Rudy Zavala and Danny (Aida) Castaneda; grandchildren, Elijah, Mario, Junior, La Nae and Xavier; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

RODRIGUEZ, JAMES BENJAMIN  
James Benjamin Rodriguez, 62, of El Centro, CA, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. James was born on July 26, 1952 in Turlock, CA. James graduated from CUHS on June 10, 1970 and joined the U.S. Navy the following month. He returned in 1974 after 4 years of service, attended IVC, and graduated with honors in 1976. James then graduated from SDSU with a Bachelor's in Liberal Studies in May 1980 and began teaching at many local schools including McCabe and Blanche Charles. Later, he graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1985 with Master's in Educational Administration. After retiring from teaching, he worked at Quality Scales as Deputy Weighmaster for 10 years. James was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, teacher, co-worker and friend. He was extremely loving, kind, generous, giving and caring, and will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Rodriguez and sister, Nancy Rivera. He is survived by his mother, Teresa Rodriguez; sisters, Yolanda Federico and Betty Rodriguez; brother, Jesse Rodriguez and many nieces and nephews. Service will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 9 a.m. with Father Nelson Vencilao officiating at St. Mary's Catholic Parish. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.

Connie Scarbrough, 91, of Calexico, CA passed away of natural causes on Friday, July 17, 2015. Connie Scarbrough was born on September 24, 1923 in Brawley, CA. She married O.D. Scarbrough. She is preceded in death by her husband O.D. Scarbrough. She is survived by her son, David Scarbrough of Santa Ana, CA; daughters, Teresa Ruiz of San Jose, CA and Diane Lopez of Orange, CA; 8 grandchidren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Rosary will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 9 a.m. with mass at 9:30 a.m. with Father Miguel Campos officiating at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Hall in Calexico. Burial will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

SCHAFFER, JOYCE MARIE  
Joyce Schaffer, 85, of Brawley passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Joyce and Her husband Paul Schaffer relocated to the Imperial Valley in the 1950's before settling in the city of Brawley. Joyce worked very hard during her life, but loved tending to her garden and flowers. Joyce was a loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. Joyce is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Paul Schaffer; father and mother, Adolph and Josephine Basgall; brother, Dennis Basgall and beloved daughter-in-law, Odessa Schaffer. She is survived by Four children and their spouses, Sheila and Marvin Novak of Brawley, Alan and Cheryl Schaffer of Calipatria, Lonnie and Hannah Schaffer of Calipatria and Shelby and Debbie Schaffer of Westmorland. She is survived by three beautiful sisters, Delores Gentry of Bossier Lousiana, Norma Steffens of Imperial, CA, and Donna Davis of Scott City, KS. Joyce also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Services will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brawley. Celebration of life potluck to follow mass at the church hall. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brawley in honor of Joyce.

SCHLOSSER, ALICE  
Alice Schlosser, 98, passed into the arms of her Savior at the Heart and Hand Assisted Living home in El Centro on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Alice was born in Saskatchewan, Canada on April 4, 1917. She had lived in El Centro since moving here in 2000 from Whidbey Island, Washington after the death of her husband of 58 years, Clarence Schlosser. Alice is survived by her two sisters, Marty Mooney and Dorothy Kopp of North Dakota; her son, Tim Schlosser of Olympia, Washington and her daughter, Sandy Fristrup of El Centro; grandsons, Jonathan Schlosser and Gregory Schlosser of Washington and granddaughters, Stephanie Gamez and Heather Knight of Imperial Valley. Alice had seven great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel of El Centro, 1923 Austin Road on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

Stephens, Gladys June (GARDNER)  
Gladys Stephens, of Palm Springs, California, went to be with the Lord on July 23, 2015. She was born Gladys June Gardner on May 30, 1933 in Deming, NM, to John and Lela Bell (Lee) Gardner. She was number twelve of thirteen children: Gib and Ophelia (Salyer) Gardner, Otho, Noble and Melvin Whitmire, Jack, Bill, Flo (Graham), Gene, Thelma (Pelayo), Roger and Shirley (Spiceland) Gardner. She married Joe W. Stephens on October 29, 1950. Joe was a house painter and they traveled many miles, across many states, following his work. Gladys was a homemaker and raised their four children. In the early 1980's, she managed the Holiday House in downtown Palm Springs for several years. That was a special time for her. She was a bookkeeper for Goodman Tile Company. For most of her life, she was either Avon's best customer or on several occasions, she sold Avon. Joe became the business agent for the painters local union and they spent a lot of time going to conventions and they enjoyed traveling so much more at that point. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly fifty years on March 15, 2000. She lost both of her parents, John and Lela Bell (Lee) Gardner in the 1960's. She is survived by her sister, Thelma Pelayo and her brother Roger Gardner, both of Deming, NM. She is survived by her children Don (Laura) Stephens of N Little Rock, AR, June (Willard) Estep of Olathe, CO, Jo (Eli) Granillo of El Centro, CA, and Icy (John) Grady of Maricopa, AZ; her grandchildren Amber, Shane (Kathryn) and Joe Ryan Stephens, Kelli (David) Hudson, Herschel Beard IV, Michelle (John) Braun and William (Amy) Beard, Icy (Cesar) Bermudez and Dawn (Jeff) Lamoure and Deborah Granillo; her great-grandchildren Maxx Stephens, Sarah and Kristen Flemmer, Alexandria and Shelby Hudson, Herschel V, Trevor and Alex Beard, Stephanie Winch and Michael Braun, CJ, Brooklyn, Chance and Brady Bermudez, Kelsey, Kylee and Ireland Lamoure, Haidan and Alyssa Hammond; and her great-great grandson Huckson Gattenby. She had numerous nieces and nephews and they were very special to her. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Forest Lawn, Cathedral City. Viewing is at 9am and service immediately after. Interment will follow at Palm Springs Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be her son, Don Stephens, son-in-law Eli Granillo, grandsons Herschel Beard IV and William Beard, great-grandson CJ Bermudez and nephew Kenneth Swanson. Junior Pall Bearers will be great-grandsons Chance and Brady Bermudez. Honorary Pall Bearers will be sons-in-law Willard Estep and John Grady. Gladys loved her family and raised her children in the church, to know and love the Lord. She will be forever in our hearts.
