Dec. 13, 1914 - July 18, 2013
Berta Myrl Chambers, 98, went home to the Lord on July 18, 2013. Born to Jonathan and Bessie Casey on December 13, 1914, in Lenox, Iowa, Myrl graduated from Lenox High School and went to business school. In 1935, Myrl came to Holtville to live with Dr. Lamar and Grace Webster to help in the doctor's office and in their home. Delbert Chambers soon asked her for a date, and they were married November 22, 1936, at the First Christian Church in Holtville.
Myrl worked seasonally for Dorman Farms while she and Delbert lived at Drops 3 and 4 on the All American Canal. While Delbert was in the Navy during World War II, she moved to Los Angeles and worked for an insurance company and Southern Pacific Railroad. After the war, she went to work as a secretary at Holtville High School. She retired in 1977 after 25 years.
Myrl was a great seamstress, sewing and mending for her family and creating many colorful quilts. She was a wonderful cook, especially known for her pies and fixing Sunday dinners for the family and guests. She loved to read and enjoyed traveling, camping, rock collecting, four-wheeling and making jelly. She was a member of the Holtville Women's Club and a life-member of the Imperial Valley Historical Society.
On Mother's Day, Myrl was honored by Cornerstone Community Church (formerly First Christian Church) for her 78 years of membership and service. She taught the Junior High girls Sunday School class for many years, was active in the Missionary Circle, and made many pies and other dishes for church events. Her keys to longevity were faith in God, sleeping well, a positive attitude and staying busy.
Myrl is survived by her daughter Carolyn of Redding; daughter-in-law Ruth; grandson Paul (Karin); granddaughter Anne; great grandchildren Caleb, Rachel, John and Luke, all of Holtville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert, of almost 73 years; sons John Michael and Joel; her parents; and sisters, Marie Moore and Dorothy Alexander.
Graveside services will be Friday, July 26, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, followed by a brunch reception at Cornerstone Community Church. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Myrl's memory may be made to the Pioneers Museum/ Holtville Gallery, 373 E. Aten Rd., Imperial, CA 92251, or Cornerstone Community Church, P. O. Box 58, Holtville, CA 92250.
