July 28, 1924 - Jan. 31, 2013

Ernesto "Ernie" Acuna, 88, of Calexico passed away peacefully of natural causes at home on January 31, 2013. Ernesto was born in Calexico on July 28, 1924 and graduated from Calexico High School in 1942. During high school he was employed part time at J.C. Penney in Calexico.
In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and served honorably overseas for the duration of World War II. After discharging from the armed forces, he returned to his employment with J.C. Penney. He retired from J.C. Penney in 1994 at the age of 70. Ernie was a dedicated member of the Lions Club for many years and served their purposes relentlessly. In addition he was a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was kind at heart and believed in the goodness of all people, but, in particular, he was a mentor to many young employees he hired at J.C. Penney. He instilled in them a strong work ethic and encouraged them in furthering their education and excelling in life; which, indeed, they went on to do. Many of them considered him, as they do to this day, as not only a beloved friend but as a second father.
Finally, all that knew him well know he was a diehard Charger fan. He loved his season ticket, but he really loved the tailgate parties the most. His smile, sense of humor, and kindness will be missed by all.
Ernie is preceded in death by parents, Joe and Dolores Acuna; brothers Joe, David, and John. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Espie Acuna; sisters-in-law Connie Rodriguez and Amada Davis; brothers Willie and Bobby Acuna, and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
Rosary will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 8:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 124 E. 5th Street, Calexico, CA. Mass will follow at 9 a.m. Graveside services will be immediately following mass at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.
