Jan. 16, 1935 - June 13, 2013

Irene "Negra" Valdivia passed away peacefully at her residence in Brawley, CA Thursday, June 13" 2013 surrounded by her five children and special niece.
"Negra", affectionately known by everyone, was born January 16, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska to Alice Valero. At a very early age she and her family traveled and settled in Brawley, CA and she attended schools in Brawley. "Negra" enjoyed telling her family of her fond memories of when she worked in the fields in Los Banos, Merced and Bear Creek, CA. Although she said it was hard work, what she gained from it was the closeness and cherished memories of her siblings and Zuniga Family. In her own words she said, "I was the best fig picker and lettuce wrapper, no one could beat me!"
She married the late Felipe "Pilo" Valdivia in 1967. Together they enjoyed time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved making holidays and birthdays special for her family with her knack to decorate. She enjoyed drinking coffee with her "pals", as she called them: Chela, Monchi, Guerra, Nora and Olga. She enjoyed shopping, loved a bargain, and was a fashionista! When one would see her, it had to be said she was in style from head to toe! She took pleasure in teaching her daughters, daughters-in- law and granddaughters how choose the perfect perfume. A daily reminder to her "girls" was, "Do not leave the house without your face on!" Another hobby of hers was collecting miniature high heels.
She was committed to serving the Lord. One of her callings was giving to the men and women in the rehabs of Victory Outreach. They had a special place in her heart! Another talent she possessed was her singing and she shared that talent with different churches in the Imperial Valley, Mexicali, MX, Ontario, CA and other cities.
Besides being a devoted wife and mother she was the "favorite Tia Negra" amongst many of her nieces and nephews.
Irene "Negra" Valdivia is preceded in death by the love of her life, Felipe "Pilo" Valdivia; granddaughter, Jaclyn Cardoza; her mother, Alice Valero; and grandmother, Delfina Zuniga. She is survived by her five children, Cathie Gloria (Ruben Cardoza), Poli Gloria (Mary), Raul Gloria (Jackie), Alice Valdivia Estrada (Marc), and Rebekah Valdivia (Veronica Zamora); her special niece, Olga Dominguez (Ralph); special nephew, Frank Chavez; her grandchildren, Lorisa, P-Jaye, Karla-Irene, Allyson, Genina, Adrian, Leah, AC, Felipe, Stephen, Corrina, Aaron and J-Jaye and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her 3 siblings, Rebecca Romero (Roumaldo), Robert Valero (Julia) and Margie Mollay. Thank you to her special caretakers, Melinda, Carmen and Roxanne. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
