Leon Spaugh, 83, of Imperial, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Promise Hospital of San Diego due to heart failure.
He was born in Los Angeles, CA at Our Lady of Angels Hospital. He and his family moved to the Imperial Valley in 1935. He attended grade school in Imperial and graduated from Central Union High School on June 8, 1950. While in high school he drove school buses part-time in between classes at school. He lived with his family on a ranch outside of Imperial until he went into U.S. National Guard for 7 years attaining the rank of Master Sergeant E-7. On November 30, 1969 he married his wife Peggy Elizabeth in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 41 years and lived together in Imperial. He started working at I.I.D. on August 14th 1972 as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He was promoted to Mechanic Leader then Shop Foreman and retired in August 27, 1993 after 21 years of service. He was also a member of Imperial County Historical Society, Gold Prospectors of America, and volunteered to help get tractors and equipment picked up for Pioneers Park Museum. He and his wife Peggy were rockhounds and gathered hundreds of rocks during their travels. He was a caring and attentive grandfather and great-grandfather as well as husband to Peggy and friend to many people throughout his life. He will be missed dearly and never forgotten in the hearts of his loved ones and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel; his father, Guy; his brother, Phil and loving wife, Peggy Elizabeth.
Pastor Mike Myrick of Faith Baptist Church of Imperial will officiate graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 11a.m.
Leon is survived by his granddaughter, Marilyn (Ronald) La Beff; great-granddaughters, Alexandria and Bethany La Beff; grandson, Glenn Freire, Jr. and grandddaugher Debbie (Pat) Jepson; sister-in-law, Alice Spaugh and niece, Millie Spaugh.
