1934 - 2014

On July 1, 2014, Nellie Hernandez quietly gave way to her battle with cancer and passed away in the comfort of her home with her children and loving husband of 65 years at her bedside. She was 80 years old. Nellie along with husband, Humberto raised five children in Calexico. She was her husband's strongest supporter. As a grandmother of twelve grandchildren, she kept busy and loved to attend their sport activities, recitals, school plays, academic recognitions, and graduations. She is also a great grandmother of two with one on the way.
She was very active in everything she pursued, always ready to spearhead, organize or volunteer. A Calexico High School graduate (1953) and first runner up of the Miss Calexico beauty pageant in 1954, her beauty inside and out continued as she served the election polls in the 1950's and 60's. As a young energetic mom, she volunteered for the Calexico Police Olympics, Punt, Pass and Kick, Little League, Pop Warner football, youth cheerleading, and numerous sporting events and activities at the Calexico High School from the 1970's through 1980's. Her enthusiasm for the community helped facilitate the construction of the Kennedy Gardens Elementary School. She also served as a member in Women's Improvement Club, 20-30 Women's Annette's Club, Calexico Bulldogs Booster Club (1970's – 1980's) , Grand Marshal along with her husband for the Calexico Christmas Parade in 1980, and a CSEA member and a site representative for 21 years.
After 20 plus years of employment, Nellie retired (1997), as a ESL (English as a second language) teacher's assistant from Calexico High School. Before making El Centro her final stay, she and her husband lived in San Diego (10 years) and Harlingen, Texas (7 years).
Nellie loved to surround herself with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends. Mexican music gave her great joy as she loved to sing along and dance. She was a woman of incredible strength. This was demonstrated in the way she lived her life. She will forever be in our hearts. She leaves behind her husband, Humberto of El Centro; children, Cynthia Trusso (Frank) of San Diego, Humberto Jr. of El Centro, Cecilia Aguilar (John) of San Diego, Corina Olivares (Rolando) of Harlingen, TX, and John of El Centro; 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bertha Velarde and Carmen Gutierrez of El Centro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alberto and Carmen Nogales; siblings, Albert, Dolores "Lola" Grassit, Rogelia Velarde and Emma Cordova.
Her celebration of life services will be held at Hems Brothers Mortuary, in El Centro, on Thursday, July 10, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. Followed by a Catholic Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church in El Centro, on July 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. and burial services immediately following mass at Mtn. View Cemetery at Calexico.
