DENZIL A. LISTON
May 28, 1919 - Feb. 22, 2014
Denzil Liston, 94, of Brawley was called to Heaven by the Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2014 in his home.
Denzil was born May 28, 1919 in Alexander, WV. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII before becoming an Ag teacher, a position he held for over 30 years at Calexico High School. Denzil was also a substitute teacher throughout the Imperial Valley for many years following his retirement. Aside from his work as a teacher, Denzil was a longtime member of Elks Club in Calexico and an active member of the United Methodist Church in Brawley.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kyle Liston, who was killed in action during WWII; father, Samuel; mother, Clara; and sister, Jolene.
Denzil is survived by his loving family: wife, Maria Liston of Brawley; daughters, Nanette Liston and Maria Valdez, both of Brawley; sons, Joel Dueñas of Brawley, Gabriel (Alma) Dueñas of Lubbock, Texas, Omar (Jennifer) Dueñas and Anthony (Lola) Liston, all of Brawley, and Raymond Liston of Chula Vista. He is also survived by his daughters, Joann Reynolds of Idaho and Aida Liston of Calexico from previous marriages. His grandchildren include, Bryan, Andrew, and Mia Dueñas, Romë and Kristyn Romero, Sydney Cardoza, Emalee, Addyson, Aubree and Ciera Dueñas, and Denzil Dueñas.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 8 at 10 a.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley with Bishop Keith Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will take place at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.
He was a loving husband and father who will be deeply missed.
