Obituary Condolences

Jan. 18, 1958 - June 28, 2012

Gordy was born in Brawley, California on January 18, 1958 to Edward "Jiggs" and Mary Elise Johnson as the only son of 5. He attended elementary school in El Centro School District and High School at Central Union High School where he enjoyed playing football all 4 years and graduated 1976. He continued his education and love for football at IVC for one year and briefly studied at BYU in Provo, Utah in 1976. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Roanoke, Virginia from 1977-1979.
Through his childhood he would work at El Toro Land & Cattle and upon returning from his mission, he returned to work. With a love for law enforcement he entered Border Patrol in 1982, only to return home in 1984 to help care for his mother, again returning to work at El Toro Land & Cattle until 1996, in which time he began working for El Toro Export.
Gordy was involved in Team Penning with his friends and family and that led him to meeting Kathryn Lynn Hubbs whom he married September 14th 1985 in El Centro, California. They were sealed for Time and All Eternity in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple on September 19th 1987.
Gordy was a family man with lots of love for his wife and children. He was a loving brother to his sisters and shared many memories with each of them. His brotherly responsibility grew in 1988 when his father remarried after the loss of Mary in 1986. Jiggs married Deanna Pew of Chandler, AZ in 1988 and the Johnson family welcomed her 5 children. Gordy took the role as a big brother and cherished the relationships he was able to make with Deanna's family.
In 2009 Gordon was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer and began a long challenge of treatments and appointments. He endured a stem cell transplant in 2010 and was in remission from the cancer for the year of 2011. He was recognized as the American Cancer Society Honoree for 2012.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn L. Johnson and children: Beth Holli Johnson, Katelyn Marie (Robert) Taylor, Cody Jiggs Johnson and Carlee Sue Johnson; grandchildren: Mason James and Oaklee Marie Taylor; his father, Edward "Jiggs" Johnson and step-mother, Deanna Johnson; siblings and their families: Karla (Ron) Haskell, Jan (Lynn) Jensen, Margo (Mel) Lamoreaux, Jolene (Shuck) Donnell, Bill (Rochelle) Orem, Becky (Brian) Higginson, Brett Orem, Lee (Courtney) Orem and David (Stefany) Pew.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elsie Johnson (1986) and nephew, Steven R. Donnell (2010).
Gordy was such a giving, loving and respected person. He was the first one to help someone in need. He was the one person that could always make your day better because he always had a smile on his face. He made a friend in every person he met and every relationship he had was important to him.
Services for Gordon Johnson will be held Saturday, July 7th at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1280 S. 8th Street, El Centro, CA 92243, followed by graveside service at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley, CA and return to El Centro LDS church for luncheon at noon.
In lieu of flowers the family has set up the Gordon Johnson Memorial Fund with Rabobank in El Centro, CA.
