Obituary Condolences

Oct. 8, 1918 - Mar. 30, 2014

There will be a Rosary and Celebration of Life Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Imperial, CA, for former Brawley resident Maria Silva, 95, who passed away on March 30 in San Diego, CA. The Reverend Emilio Magana will officiate. There will be viewing from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the same church.
Born in Calvillo, Aguascalientes, where she grew up and married Jose Silva, Maria came to rural Brawley in 1948 to join her husband, where she raised thirteen children (three infant children born in Mexico had passed away by this time). During that time, she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brawley, and for 15 years hosted the celebration of the Mass and religion classes at her home, which in 1957 the Diocese of San Diego designated as a mission of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
In 1972, Maria and Jose moved to Spring Valley, where she lived until her death. There she continued her mission of evangelization by hosting prayer meetings at her home, participating in prison ministries, preparing children for the sacraments and forming, along with her daughter Carmen, the choir for the Spanish language mass at Mission San Diego de Alcala's St. Francis Chapel.
Maria was preceded in death by her children Martita, Alfonso, David, Alfonso, Josephine, Martha and Anna, and her husband, Jose, and is survived by her children Jesse and Gloria Silva, Margaret and Elias Chairez, Peter and Ana Silva, David and Ana Silva, Esther and Manuel Lutz, George and Myrna Silva, Carmen Silva, Susan and Floyd Rosson, Teri and Rick Luque, sons-in-law Robert Dillon and John Hoskins, 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Maria has been a woman of faith, always an example of strength and action, evidenced by her continued commitment to spreading the word of God. She leaves many dear friends behind not only here in Imperial Valley, but in the San Diego area as well.
"Many women have done wonderful things, but you've outclassed them all. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the fear of God." Proverbs 31:29
