1920 - 2013
May Hulse, long-time resident of Niland, passed away suddenly on December 30 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gilbert (Gib) Hulse; her parents Harry and Nellie Andrews; five brothers, and three sisters. May is survived by her children Gilbert (Gil) Hulse of La Mesa, and Bonnie Goodwin (Ben) of Stockton; six grandchildren, seven great-grand- children, one sister, and many nieces and nephews.
May was born in Langley, Kansas and she and her husband moved to California in the 1940's where they both were employed as welders in a Richmond shipyard. They moved to Niland shortly after the war where they operated a trucking business and May worked several years at Niland Elementary School and later served as Niland Postmaster.
They both enjoyed hunting and fishing. May and Gib were also known to participate in gambling on horse races and, at the casinos they could often times be seen at the dice tables. Following Gib's death, she enjoyed traveling to play the slot machines with friends. She was a member of Niland Full Gospel Lighthouse Church, and spent Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons with the ladies of the Can Do club. Her greatest treasures were family and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 5, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Graveside service will be Monday, January 6, 11:30 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a donation to a
