Jan. 10, 1943 - July 9, 2013

Rosie Raya passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 peacefully and surrounded by her loving family at Scripps La Jolla. Rosie's sudden passing occurred after a brave battle against cancer.
Rosie was born on January 10, 1943 in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico and immigrated to the US via Mexicali in 1953. After spending much of her early years in migratory field labor, Rosie graduated from Calexico High in 1961 later earning her associate's degree from Imperial Valley College in 1987. Between these years. Rosie married Ricardo Raya, had four children, became a grandmother and began a 25 year career as a dedicated and zealous teaching assistant. Rosie spent most of her career working with students at De Anza Jr. High in Calexico, building futures with empathy, guidance and patience. Upon retirement in 2000, Rosie actively participated in many civic associations including Relay for Life, Women's Improvement Club, Tzu Chi Foundation, the Imperial Valley Democratic Party, and was a founding member of the Calexico Historical Museum. Her greatest achievements were her love, care, smile, and unwavering faith in Christ.
Rosie was preceded in death by her mother, Maria del Carmen Cordova Rascon; father, Ysidro Rascon; son, Richard R. Raya.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ricardo A. Raya of Calexico; daughters, Sylvia R. (Hector P.) Ochoa of Calexico, Carmen Raya-(Fidel) Gutierrez of Buena Park, CA; son, Marco Raya of San Diego, CA; sister, Blanca Rascon of San Diego, CA; brothers, Ysidro Rascon and Rigo Rascon both from San Diego, CA; granddaughters, Roxie Aguirre of Riverside, CA, Sierra Soto of Buena Park, CA and Amy Raya of Tijuana, BC and grandson, Michael Aguirre of Seattle, WA; She is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, her sister-in-laws and many loyal friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday July 17, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in Calexico. A special service will be held at this time by Pastor Rodrigo Bravo/Jesus Esqueda. Service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico and will be officiated by Emilio Magána. Burial will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.
