Roy W. Alsip, known as Papaw to family and friends, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, October 24 at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. Roy was born April 14, 1935 to Melvin and Idela Alsip in Corbin, Kentucky. He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1954. He moved to Salem, Indiana where he worked for Salem Cabinet Co. and later as a driver for Salem Creamery. In Salem he would meet Anna Marie Brickey and marry her on April 14, 1956 in Salem, Indiana. They would move to the Imperial Valley in September of 1960, where Roy would begin working for Valley Transit Company and later he was hired by the Imperial Irrigation District as maintenance Worker and later became a zanjero. Roy was associated with the IID for over 52 years. Roy was an active member of the community, serving as a council member for the city of Calipatria, Calipatria Chamber of Commerce, Calipatria Planning Commission, the IV Housing Authority, IID Citizen's Advisory Committee, American Red Cross, Seaview Little League, Calipatria Babe Ruth, and Senior Citizen's emergency fund to name a few. Roy was also named Imperial County Man of the Year in 2006. Roy was also a volunteer fire fighter for the City of Calipatria for 18 years where he helped with the annual fireworks show for 30 years. In his spare time he later drove a school bus for the Calipatria School District, mostly taking trips to sporting events. Roy enjoyed attending the various sporting events his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participated in, encouraging and cheering on.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Idela and Hess Barnett; and father, Melvin C. Alsip.
Roy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna Alsip of Calipatria; children and their spouses, Steve (Barbara) Alsip of Brawley, Jacki Alsip of Calipatria, and Kathi (Benny) Hamilton of Calipatria; brothers, Estil (Jane) Alsip of Imperial, Keith (Charlotte) Barnett of Corbin, Kentucky, and Darrell (Kim) Barnett of Corbin, Kentucky; sister, Susan (Elton) Cox of Imperial; step mother, Martha Alsip of Imperial; grandchildren, Brett (Sarah) Alsip, Chad Alsip, Joe Gonzales, Mercedes (Joe) Diaz, Justin (Brenna) Northup, Miles Hamilton, Taylor Hamilton, Christopher Garcia, and Channa Alsip; great- grandchildren, Rose Alsip, Evan Alsip, Sadee Lopez, Andee Lopez, Phillip Alsip, Reese Alsip, Joe Diaz, Joshua Diaz, Logan Northup, Ryan Hanks, and Christopher Hank. He also leaves behind a large number of extended family members and friends.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, October 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Graveside service will commence at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30 at Riverview Cemetery.
