Rufina Ypina Flores went to be with the Lord on April 4, 2012. She was born on September 9, 1931 in Saint Paul, Minnesota on the Indian Reservation. She was born to Jesus Yupina and Caroline Crooks. Rufina was the second child of four children. She moved to Brawley, CA at the age of seven. She attended all Brawley schools and graduated from Brawley Union High School. Later she met and married Ted Flores on October 3, 1954. They had six children. She was employed by El Centro Regional Medical Center for forty eight years. She started in the OB and Nursery as a certified nurses assistant. She later went back to pursue her nursing degree at the age of fifty eight. She graduated with her associates degree. She later moved onto Medsurg and finally outpatient surgery as the Unit Secretary. She always took her job very seriously but with a smile. She never let anything slip through her fingers and was always on task. Rufina was very proud of her Native American Heritage. She let everyone know she was a Sioux Indian and said it with a serious face. She would say "Don't make me pull out my Tomahawk", with a big smile. Rufina loved to go shopping and buy things for the family. She was always very loving and giving. Helping out friends and family financially and spiritually. Rufina was also a very caring and religious lady. She would always tell her family and friends to leave it in God's hands when there were hard times. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. She was very loved by her family, friends and coworkers at ECRMC. She also enjoyed being at work with her coworkers. She was also a very faithful member of Trinity First Southern Baptist Church in Holtville. Rufina will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.
Rufina is preceded in death by her husband, Ted Flores; sons, Ted Flores Jr. and Steve Flores; brother, Sever Ypina; sisters, Francis Schuh and Margaret Rodriguez; father, Jesus Ypina and mother, Carline Crooks.
Rufina's loved ones she left behind are sons, Julio, Michael, Jeff and Jerry Flores; a granddaughter she raised as her own, Monica Flores; granddaughter, Melissa Flores; brothers, Pete, Daniel and Joe Ypina; sisters, Linda, Virginia and Trini Ypina; sister-in-law, Dolores Ypina. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Rufina will be missed greatly.
Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 6 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley.
