June 17, 1929 - Jan. 31, 2010
Betty Friesen Germani, a longtime Imperial Valley resident, died at her El Centro home on January 31 after a long illness.
Germani, born June 17, 1929 in Oklahoma City first arrived in the Valley during World War II when her father, the late Peter C. Friesen, founded Imperial Savings and Loan Association.
Germani graduated in 1947 from Central Union High School, attended San Diego State College, and returned to the Valley where she worked at Title Insurance Company as a bookkeeper.
In 1953, she married Norman Germani, a radio announcer at KXO who went on to work with Mr. Friesen in the savings and loan business. She raised three daughters in El Centro, actively supporting their school and sports activities, including co-founding a competitive swim team and keeping the books for Imperial Valley Gymnastics.
When her girls were finished with school in the late 1970s, she decided on a midlife career change in pursuit of a dream – law school. She took on a grueling schedule of long distance law school attendance, traveling two or three times a week to San Diego to attend classes for three years. She earned a Juris Doctorate in 1982 and worked in law offices in the Valley before retiring.
She is survived by her husband, Norman Germani, and their three daughters, Clara Germani of Needham, Mass. (with husband and daughter Marshall and Ellen Ingwerson), Gina Germani of El Centro, and Marcie Germani Simmons of Rancho Bernardo, Calif. (with husband Ross Simmons).
Burial at Evergreen Cemetery will be private. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception and memorial service to celebrate Germani's life on Sunday, February 7 from noon to 1 p.m. at Cheval's, 346 Larsen Rd., Imperial.
