Margaret Lydick, 90, passed peacefully Monday, November 25, 2013 in Cathedral City, California.
Margaret was born November 29, 1922 to parents John and Jeanette (Thoreson) Sersland in Audubon, Minnesota. Margaret grew up in the small town of Alvarado, Minnesota. After graduation from high school in 1940 she attended Teacher Training in Warren, Minnesota from 1940-41. She started her teaching career in 1941 in a one room country school. During summer she continued her education earning a diploma that allowed her to teach in any public elementary school.
There was a shortage of teachers in the western states and Margaret was recruited to teach at McCabe Elementary in the Imperial Valley. In May 1948, she married John Lydick Jr., a valley farmer.
Margaret and family moved to Bakersfield, California in 1959. She was hired by the Panama Union School District and taught second grade at Stine Elementary until she retired at age 65. Margaret wasn't ready to retire, she continued to substitute and also performed vision screening at all the elementary schools in the Panama District.
In 2001 Margaret moved to Cathedral City, California to be closer to her children. She continued to substitute teach until June 2010 and at the age of 87 retired again. Margaret was a devoted teacher and enjoyed following the lives of her students as they entered their careers and had families of their own.
Margaret is survived by her three children, Karen Hale, Brawley, CA, W. Shannon Lydick, Cathedral City, CA, and John (Michelle) Lydick, Yuma, AZ; grandchildren, Lindsay (Paul) Messner, Scott Hale, and Shane (Tyece) Lydick; great-grandchil- dren, Jack and Charlie Messner, and Dax, Destiny, and Joshua Lydick.
