Alta Gray Freeman
Funeral services for Alta Gray Freeman, age 87, will be on March 27, 2014 at 3 p.m. in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Harrell Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers to serve will be Joe Niesler, Denny Thorman, Roger Smith, Don Kirk, Don Senter, and Don Mallette.
Mrs. Freeman died March 23, 2014. She was born in Michie, TN , the daughter of Ernest and Lena Stutts Gray, on December 6, 1926.
She graduated from Michie High School in 1945, Lambuth University in 1949 with a BS Degree, and she earned a Master's Degree from Memphis State University in 1954. She taught in the Jackson - Madison County School System for 40 years, 33 of them at Jackson High School/Jackson Central-Merry in the math department.
She joined Lebanon United Methodist Church at Michie, TN at an early age. She has been a member of Highland Heights and St. Andrew United Methodist Church since 1952. She has served as a Sunday School teacher, delegate to the Memphis Annual Conference, President of the United Methodist Women, and on several committees. She also served on United Methodist Women committees.
She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers society and a life member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clyde Freeman; a son, David Freeman of Pensacola, FL; two granddaughters, Deborah Dai Ranberger of Jackson and Amy Elizabeth Mallette (Joe) of Paris, TN; five great- grandchildren, Brandon Lee Mooney, Elizabeth Christine Wentzell, Braxton David Medina, Madison Elizabeth Medina, and Cecilia Lou Mallette.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Lena Gray; and a brother, Ernest Daniel Gray.
Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014 in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m., one hour prior to the service.
