Melvin D. Johnson

Melvin D. Johnson went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

Melvin was born in Galveston, TX and graduated from Clovis High School in Clovis, CA. Melvin loved camping, cutting fire wood, and being with family. He loved going fishing at Little Sandy and Big Sandy in the Sierra Mountains with his dog, Boo by his side. He loved making homemade tapes of music and spending time with friends and family in the garage. He loved all his grandkids and loved to spoil them as much as possible.

Melvin served in the Navy from 1961-1966 to serve our country and spent time in Vietnam as a result. He served on the USS Burton Island and the USS Aludra Af-55. He received 2 medals; the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Vietnam Area of Operations and the National Defense Service Medal.

Melvin also worked at the Borax plant in Boron, CA and was part of the famous 1974 strike. He was also a truck driver and owned his own trucking business before going to work for Smart Transport, where he ultimately retired.

Melvin was a member of the VFW, the American Legions, and E Clampus Vitus, Chapter 41-49. He also held an Honorary Deed Certificate with The Civil War Preservation Trust as well as a constant contributor to the Disabled Veterans Association.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Brenda Johnson of Jackson, TN; 2 daughters, Darla Lambuth and her husband Terrel, as well as Debbie Martin and her husband Ray, all of Tehachapi, CA; Wayne Johnson of Jackson, TN; and Tommy Johnson and wife Angie of Montrose, CO. He is also survived by his step-children, Jenny Crouse of Palm Springs, FL, Samantha Redding and husband Chris of Bells, TN and Matt Soares and fiancée Jessica French of Alamo, TN. Melvin left behind 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, as well as his beloved dog, Cash.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 8th in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Jackson, TN, with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Melvin will be laid to rest in Pollard, AR.
