Robert Lynn Mills
Memphis, TN - WWII
Veteran Robert Lynn Mills, age 93, son of the late Medina, TN Mayor, Moody James Mills and Mrs. Goldie Raye Watt Mills, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. By his side was his devoted wife, Louise Towater Lynch Mills, retiree of Union University, Jackson, TN.
Robert Lynn Mills was a shining example of The Greatest Generation who experienced the hardships of The Great Depression, served selflessly during WWII, and then built modern-day America.
Born August 2, 1920, Mr. Mills graduated from Medina High School. At the age of 16, because of Robert's fascination with automobiles, his father suggested he build and manage a service station/garage. Robert was gifted with rare mechanical intelligence - he could fix anything. During WWII, this gift took Robert to Keesler Field, Biloxi, MS, where he served as an Instructor of aviation mechanics for the B-24 bombers. Mr. Mills enjoyed a long civil service career at the Army Depot in Memphis as an equipment specialist with the Department of Defense. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and received Lifetime Membership status.
With a sparkle in his eyes, Robert delighted in sharing his life stories. He focused his talents toward helping those who could benefit from his skills. Even at 93 he received calls from repair shops, nephews, etc., asking for advice on how to fix a carburetor, a door glass motor, or a lawn mower.
Mr. Mills was preceded in death by his first wife, Maude Elizabeth Perry; two siblings, his sister Marie Mills (Roy) Lemond, Medina, TN and a brother, James DeVaughan Mills and wife, Elizabeth "Mickey" Barlow Mills of Memphis.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. JoAnn Mills (Jack) Campbell of Hoover, AL and his stepson who loved him as a father, M. Kyle Lynch (Amy), Lexington, KY, parents of Liberty Claire and Audie Dale. Mr. Mills had ten nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 15th at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8161 Germantown Rd., Olive Branch, MS 38654, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., when the Memorial service will begin. Mr. and Mrs. Mills served as Elders of the church. Interment will be held at 5 p.m., at Centerville Cemetery, 134 Milan Highway, Medina, TN 38355 for which Mr. Mills served on the Board of Directors.
