Ruth Barrett Maness

Medina, TN - Ruth Barrett Maness, age 90, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Grace Healthcare in Cordova, TN, where she had been a resident for the past 10 months.

She was born Ruth Ann Scroggins on September 12, 1923 in Jackson, Tennessee to the late Wesley Scroggins and Emma Smith Scroggins. She was married in 1940 to Frank T. Barrett, who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1967, she was married to Floyd H. Maness, who preceded her in death in 2000.

Ruth lived most of her life in the outskirts of Medina, Tennessee. After the untimely death of her mother in 1930, Ruth lived in the home of her sister, Nola Mai Luckey and husband John in the Friendship Community, where she attended Cedar Grove School. She later returned to her father's home in middle Tennessee where she lived until her marriage to Frank. Ruth and Frank made their home in the Friendship Community of Medina, where they raised their 5 children. Ruth and Floyd also made Friendship Community their home, where Ruth remained until she was admitted to the Nursing Home in 2013.

Ruth was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, near Medina, for 74 years, where she attended regularly until she became unable to leave her home. She was a member of the Ladies' Sunday School Class. In earlier years, she taught children's Sunday School classes and worked in Vacation Bible School. She was retired from Porter Cable in Jackson, Tennessee.

Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Robert T. Barrett in 1989; by grandsons, Frankie Hensley, Barry Hensley, Maron Barrett and an infant, Frank Harry Barrett; a step-son, Bill Maness; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Barrett and a great-grandson, Marquez Patterson. She was also preceded in death by all her siblings: Nola Mai Luckey, Ruby Gray, William Scroggins, Robert Scroggins, Frances Barnes and Lily Mai Cates, and by 4 infant siblings: Dewey Scroggins and unnamed triplets.

She is survived by one son, Paul Barrett and his wife Carol of Alamo, TN and by three daughters, Jane Mayo of Milan, TN, Carol Stricklin of Arlington, TN and Sue Adams of Copperas Cove, TX. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Lianne Fletcher, Lisa Harris, Jeff Mayo, Michelle Barrett, Melissa Finney, Anna Sunderland, Maria Paash, Cristie Pellegrin, Brian Stricklin, Tammy Barrett, Robert Barrett, Wesley Barrett and Tracy Patterson; by 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a stepson, Odell Maness and three stepdaughters, Marion Thompson, Patsy Terry and Peggy Trull.

Funeral Memorial services will be conducted for Mrs. Maness in the chapel of Replogle-Lawrence Funeral Home in Medina, Tennessee at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014. Visitation with the family will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014. The body will be interred in Hopewell Cemetery near Medina.
